The increase to 55p per mile was announced in May 2026 and is backdated to 6 April 2026 for the entire 2026/27 tax year. (GOV.UK)
Here’s an updated post:
For the first time in 15 years, the approved mileage rate for cars and vans has increased from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles.
The change applies from 6 April 2026 and could mean bigger tax deductions for sole traders and higher tax-free mileage reimbursements for employees.
If you’re using your own vehicle for business, make sure you’re claiming the correct rate and keeping accurate mileage records.
